Origami Wave

Origami Wave

Responsive Structure that Breathes as You Do

Origami Wave is a course project of mine --- the course that introduced me to the world of interactive installations.
To put it simply, it's a piece of origami work that could contract and relax according to the rhythm of human breath it detects.

Independent Work | 2013     Skills: Interaction Design, Rapid Prototyping, Graphic Design Tools:  Grasshopper, Rhino

Interaction

When the viewer inhales, the whole piece shrinks horizontally. And when he/she exhales, the piece expands.
Thence, the involuntary behavior of the viewer becomes part of the piece. The environment adapts to the people it accommodates.

Prototyping

I built models in Rhino with the help of Grasshopper, and made paper prototype to see whether it could actually contract and relax as expected.
My lessons were that the paper should be engineered ( + adhesive PVC tape) to make it more resilient.

Graphic Design

The texture of the origami prototype was extracted as canvas for graphic design. It speaks to my belief in Reduce, Recycle and Reuse in design.
Elements that can be reused, should be reused.
